We pull the whole toilet up. Scrape off the old gross wax. Put a new thick one on. Then we squish the toilet back down. It has to be tight. If we see water around the base of your toilet, we worry about the floor. We check to make sure the wood isnt rotted.

We make sure the new one fits. Not all toilets are the same size. There is a thing called “rough-in”. It measures from the wall to the bolts. If you buy the wrong size from the store, it wont fit. We measure first.
We also put on a new seat. And we caulk around the bottom so it looks clean. But we leave a little gap at the back. Why? So if it leaks later, you see the water. If you caulk the whole way around, the water gets trapped and rots the floor without you knowing. That is a pro tip.
